Speaking in Parliament, the Prime Minister criticized these actions while discussing solutions for the education sector.
“The government, with the help of China, has ensured full school uniform requirements for 2025. However, opposition groups are working to disrupt these efforts,” she said.
The Prime Minister referred to an incident last week in which she reportedly arrived late to a ceremony where the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka formally handed over a donation of school uniforms.
She criticized the way some media outlets reported on the event, accusing them of trying to create diplomatic tensions between Sri Lanka and China.
According to the some media reports, during the event, the Prime Minister mistakenly thanked Taiwan, a rival of China for the donation, in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador, Qi Zhenhong.
She alleged that opposition groups and media organizations aligned with them were attempting to portray the government as weak in managing international relations. However, she asserted that such efforts have repeatedly failed.
“Some media institutions and opposition factions are trying to portray our government as diplomatically weak, but their efforts have failed,” Amarasuriya stated, thanking China for its understanding of the situation.
The Prime Minister also highlighted President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s ongoing state visit to India as a testament to the government’s successful foreign relations.
