In response to ongoing heavy rains, all six spill gates of the Nachchaduwa Reservoir have been opened this afternoon. The gates have been opened at varying heights: two gates by one foot each, two gates by two feet each, and two gates by three feet each.

This release has resulted in a discharge of 1,436 cubic feet per second into the Malwathu Oya, raising concerns about potential flooding in nearby areas.

The Irrigation Department has issued a warning to residents in low-lying areas along both banks of the Malwathu Oya, urging them to remain vigilant as the water levels are expected to rise. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates if necessary.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
