Tharindu Wins "Sanctuary Asia Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award"
This historic win, celebrated at the awards ceremony in Mumbai, India, marks a significant moment for Sri Lanka on the global stage of wildlife conservation and photography.
The “Sanctuary Asia Wildlife Photographer of the Year” award, part of the renowned Sanctuary Asia Wildlife Conservation Initiative, has long been regarded as one of the most competitive and respected honors in wildlife photography.
Established in 1981 by the renowned conservationist Bittu Sahgal, the initiative has fostered a greater awareness of wildlife conservation while highlighting exceptional talent in the field. Photographers from across Asia compete annually, and while Sri Lankan photographers have been recognized in various categories over the years, none had previously claimed the top prize until Sendanayake's triumph.
Sendanayake's win not only highlights his exceptional skill and vision as a wildlife photographer but also underscores the increasing global recognition of Sri Lanka’s talent in wildlife conservation storytelling. His achievement serves as a proud moment for the Sri Lankan wildlife photography community and marks a milestone in the country’s contributions to the international conservation efforts.
As the first Sri Lankan recipient of this honor, Tharindu Dilshan Sendanayake's victory is expected to inspire a new generation of photographers in Sri Lanka and across Asia, reinforcing the importance of conservation through powerful imagery.
