Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara announced that the opposition plans to propose a candidate for the position of Speaker of Parliament.
At a media briefing in Colombo today (December 15), MP Bandara stated that the nomination would be presented during the next parliamentary session on Tuesday, December 17. He emphasized that the opposition aims to nominate a Speaker who genuinely represents their interests and has credible qualifications.
A final decision on the nominee will be made at a meeting tomorrow (December 16).
MP Bandara also accused some MPs of using fraudulent qualifications to secure their positions and urged the Bar Association of Sri Lanka to investigate these allegations. He highlighted complaints to the Medical Council, claiming that some “specialist” doctors in Parliament lack genuine credentials.
Calling for greater accountability, Bandara remarked, “Resigning as Speaker is not enough. He must also step down as an MP.”
