The Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe, announced that nearly 8,000 metric tons of imported rice have been released to the market.

The rice was imported through open tenders to address market demand.

The Minister emphasized that all relevant departments have been instructed to conduct thorough checks on the imported stocks to ensure quality. During inspections, three out of 75 containers from a particular supplier were found to contain substandard rice. These stocks will be returned to the supplier and will be re exported again.

Looking ahead, Minister Samarasinghe said rice imports will be managed through Lak Sathosa and the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation starting December 20.
