Following the resignation of former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala, three names have been proposed as potential candidates for the position of Speaker in Sri Lanka's Parliament.
According to political sources, Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih, MP Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi and MP Nihal Galappaththi have been proposed as potential candidates.
Ashoka Ranwala stepped down after facing widespread public and political criticism over the legitimacy of his claimed doctorate.
He formally resigned on December 13, and his resignation accepted by the President and officially acknowledged by Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayaka and notified Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera yesterday (December 14).
Parliament will reconvene on December 17, presided over by Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih. A new Speaker is expected to be elected the same day in accordance with constitutional requirements.
