Parliament has announced that a new Speaker will be selected on next Tuesday , December 17, following the resignation of Ashoka Ranwala.
According to parliamentary rules, whenever the Speaker’s position becomes vacant, Parliament is required to elect a new Speaker at its first meeting after the vacancy.
Former Speaker Ranwala stepped down due to a controversy surrounding his educational qualifications.
Parliament is scheduled to convene on December 17 and 18, during which the selection process for the new Speaker will take place.
