The Presidential Secretary, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, has officially informed the Secretary General of Parliament in writing that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has accepted the resignation of Speaker Ashoka Ranwala.
The formal communication confirms that Speaker Ranwala has stepped down from his position as Speaker of Parliament.
Further details regarding the process to elect a new Speaker are yet to be announced.
According to parliamentary rules, whenever the Speaker’s position becomes vacant, Parliament is required to elect a new Speaker at its first meeting after the vacancy.
Parliament is scheduled to meet on December 17 and 18, during which it is expected that a new Speaker will be appointed.
