In response to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area, authorities have opened two emergency spillways of Kala Wewa this morning. According to the Irrigation Engineer in charge, the water capacity of the reservoir has reached 83,721 acre-feet, prompting the decision to release water to manage the increasing levels.

The spillways will be opened one at a time, with a total of 1,018 cubic feet per second of water being released into the Kala Oya River. The move aims to prevent any potential overflow and ensure the safety of the surrounding areas.

Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control, and further monitoring will be conducted to assess the impact of the release.

Residents living downstream of Kala Wewa are advised to stay alert as water levels in the Kala Oya may rise.
