The first shipment of rice imported by private importers has entered the Sri Lankan market. Reports indicate that 75,000 kg of rice, including Samba and White Raw varieties from India, were cleared by Customs yesterday (December 11).

This development follows the Cabinet’s decision on December 3 to allow rice imports without control permits until December 20, 2024, addressing a shortage of several rice types in local markets.

The Essential Food Commodities Importers & Traders Association stated that additional rice shipments are expected to arrive today (December 12) and tomorrow (December 13), further stabilizing supplies.
