Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that education should not be treated as a commodity, calling for a change in the transactional culture surrounding it.

Speaking at a workshop “Preparing Relevant Strategies to Transform the Existing Education System” at the Colombo Foundation Institute yesterday ( December 11), she highlighted the need for a transformative education system that fosters individual and societal growth.

She stressed that education policies should be guided by data and developed in the best interests of schoolchildren, moving away from decisions based on personal opinions. The Prime Minister also called for more empathetic behavior from public officials, ensuring better service delivery and addressing long-standing complaints from the public.

“Education is a long-term investment, not something that yields results in weeks. Policies must focus on creating an education system that nurtures knowledge, skills, and social responsibility,” PM Amarasuriya stated.

The event, which discussed reforms from early childhood education to higher and vocational education, was attended by Deputy Education Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne, Education Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa, and education professionals. The discussion aligned with the government’s policy to bring meaningful changes to the education system.
