Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage has raised concerns about the government's decision to significantly reduce the security detail of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Speaking at a press briefing at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Policy Center yesterday (December 11).

He disclosed that the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for human resource management issued an official notification to Rajapaksa’s security division on December 10.

He revealed that 116 security personnel, including officers with specialized VIP security training, have been removed from Rajapaksa’s protection team. He criticized the move, warning it could lead to serious security risks, particularly due to the ongoing presence of individuals adhering to the ideology of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

He emphasized that this reduction comes despite Rajapaksa’s pivotal role in eradicating terrorism in Sri Lanka during his presidency. He called the government’s actions a grave issue, questioning the rationale behind reducing protection for a former leader who had played such a critical role in the nation’s security.
