The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided not to grant bonuses to its employees this year, despite demands from the CEB Employees' Union, which is affiliated with the National People's Power (NPP).

The union had requested bonuses before  December 10, citing improved financial performance and a shift in government leadership.

General Secretary of the union Ranjan Jayalal emphasized that employees had gone two years without bonuses under the previous administration and expected improved benefits under the current government.

However, the CEB Board of Directors stated that while the organization reported significant profits in 2024, Rs. 112 billion was used to clear outstanding debts to institutions like the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, and Rs. 41 billion was allocated to reduce electricity tariffs for consumers. As a result, no funds were left for employee bonuses.

CEB Media Spokesperson Dhanushka Parakramasinghe confirmed that the decision not to grant bonuses is final and fixed.
