Renuka Perera, the Administrative Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), was released on bail today (December 5) by the Colombo Magistrate's Court.
He had been arrested earlier in the day by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly sharing false information on social media regarding “Mahaveer Naal” commemorations in the Northern Province.
CID officers visited Perera’s residence this morning ( December 5) to record his statement before taking him into custody. He was later produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate, who granted bail on two personal bonds of Rs. 1 million each.
The Magistrate instructed the CID to continue investigating those involved in organizing this “Mahaveer Naal” commemorations violating rules and regulations given by the authorities, directing them to identify and arrest the responsible parties.
According to CID officers, Perera was accused of sharing videos of “Mahaveer Naal” commemorations held in Australia on Facebook, falsely claiming they occurred in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. The CID emphasized that no such events had taken place locally and argued that circulating such videos could incite communal tensions.
The case was heard in the Magistrate’s chambers, and the court was informed that several statements had already been recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
