Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera has denied allegations of assault made against him by Jaffna District Independent MP Dr. Archchuna Ramanathan.
The claims surfaced during yesterday’s (December 3) parliamentary session, where Dr. Archchuna alleged that MP Perera assaulted him at the Opposition Leader’s Office within the Parliament Complex.
Addressing Parliament today, MP Perera refuted the accusation, stating, “I did not attack him. However, an incident did occur at the office of the Leader of the Opposition. He had an argument with the secretary of the leader of the opposition while I and MP Alawathuwala were nearby. I advised him to consult party leaders or the Speaker to resolve his concerns, but he dismissed my suggestion.”
Perera added that Dr. Archchuna’s criticisms of the opposition leader and staff were inappropriate and unwarranted.
The incident follows a separate controversy involving Dr. Archchuna, who mistakenly occupied the Opposition Leader’s seat and refusing to leave the seat during the inaugural session of the Tenth Parliament. This misstep drew significant attention, though the MP later issued an apology during an orientation workshop for new parliamentarians on November 25.
