The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to reduce government spending by disposing of super luxury vehicles with high maintenance and fuel costs.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake submitted the proposal to streamline the government vehicle fleet, focusing on those with higher engine capacities that significantly increase expenses.

A formal study will be conducted on vehicles used in all government institutions. The Secretary to the Treasury has been authorized to issue circular instructions for disposing of vehicles with petrol engine capacities  exceeding 1800cc and diesel engine capacities above 2300cc. Exceptions include double cabs, single cabs, vans, and buses under customs code 87.03.

Relevant Chief Accounting Officers must complete the disposal process through the prescribed procurement procedures by March 1, 2025, and report the outcomes to the Controller General of the Treasury.
