The Government has raised the monthly allowances under the Aswesuma Welfare benefit scheme, as announced by Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

The benefits for 800,000 recipients under the general category have been increased from Rs. 8,500 to Rs. 10,000. For the most vulnerable category, covering 400,000 recipients, allowances have been raised from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 17,500.

Addressing Parliament today (December 3), Minister Jayatissa stated that the Cabinet has approved an extension of the Aswesuma program in two phases. Benefits for 400,000 vulnerable individuals, initially set to end on December 31, 2024, will be extended for another year. 

Additionally, allowances for another 400,000 recipients will now continue until March 31, 2025.
