Insurance Manager Remanded Over Tragedy of Deegadanthu 1
Last week, the tusker, known to roam the Kala Wewa and Kahalla-Pallakelle reserves, died after being electrocuted by an illegal electric fence.
Following investigations, the manager of the Kekirawa branch of a major insurance company, a resident of Galkiriyagama was arrested by wildlife officials and presented to the Kekirawa Acting Magistrate. The court ordered the suspect to be remanded until December 12.
Wildlife officers informed the court that they had recovered unauthorized electrical wiring, a car battery, and a circuit used for the illegal fence.
They emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the incident, which led to the suspect’s remand.
The death of Deegadanthu 1 has sparked widespread concern over wildlife protection and the use of illegal electric fences.
