Supreme Court Justice Murdu Nirupa Bidushinie Fernando was officially sworn in today (December 2) as Sri Lanka's 48th Chief Justice.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Presidential Secretariat before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Justice Fernando succeeds Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, who recently retired. Her appointment was approved by the Constitutional Council.

Starting her career at the Attorney General’s Department in 1985, she rose through the ranks to hold positions such as Deputy Solicitor General in 1997 and Additional Solicitor General in 2014. In March 2018, she was appointed to the Supreme Court and served as its most senior justice prior to her new role.

Justice Fernando holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Colombo and has contributed significantly to shaping Sri Lanka’s legal framework. She has also served as Senior Additional Solicitor General at the Attorney General’s Department.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the President.
