A 41-year-old Navy officer was killed by a wild elephant near the Punewa Naval Base in Medawachchiya. The victim, a Lieutenant Commander stationed at the base, was a resident of Nittambuwa.
In another incident, a 69-year-old woman from Mahasengama, Galenbindunuwewa, succumbed to injuries sustained during another wild elephant attack. She passed away after being admitted to the Anuradhapura hospital.
The ongoing severe weather has disrupted elephant habitats, forcing them to move into human-inhabited areas more and could increase the likelihood of such tragic encounters. Authorities urge residents to stay alert in relevant areas.
