South Africa Thrash Sri Lanka by 233 Runs, Lead Series 1-0
After being sent in to bat, South Africa struggled on a lively pitch, managing just 191 runs. Temba Bavuma, returning from injury, top-scored with 70. Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara claimed three wickets each.
Sri Lanka's response was historic for the wrong reasons. They were bowled out for just 42 runs in 13.5 overs their lowest-ever Test total and the third-lowest in global Test history since 1974. Marco Jansen was sensational, taking 7-13 in 6.5 overs, equaling a world record set in 1904 by Australia’s Hugh Trumble for the fastest seven-wicket haul.
South Africa capitalized on their first-inning lead, with Bavuma scoring 113 and Tristan Stubbs smashing 122 in the second inning. They set a daunting target of 516 runs. Despite some resistance, Sri Lanka was dismissed for 282, falling well short.
The win propelled South Africa to second place in the ICC World Test Championship standings, with their points percentage rising to 59.25. Sri Lanka, who entered the series ranked third, slipped to fifth, with a points percentage of 50 from 10 matches.
The second Test will be held on December 5 at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth.
