The death toll from the ongoing severe weather in Sri Lanka has risen to 15, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed today (November 30). Among the fatalities, 10 were reported in Ampara, with one death each in Badulla, Puttalam, Trincomalee, and Vavuniya. The adverse conditions have also injured 20 people, while one person is still missing.

The extreme weather has affected over 475,000 individuals from 141,268 families across 24 districts.

The DMC reported that 32,361 people from 9,937 families are currently staying in 266 safety shelters. Additionally, 106,512 individuals from 42,565 families have sought refuge with relatives. The destruction includes 101 homes completely demolished and 2,591 houses partially damaged.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for nine districts, including Badulla, Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts. These warnings, extended until 4:00 PM today, include amber and yellow alerts in specific areas.

Flood risks remain high as heavy rainfall has forced the opening of sluice gates in reservoirs across Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Vavuniya, Kandy, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, and Monaragala. The rising water levels in key rivers, including the Mundeni Aru, Deduru Oya, Mahaweli River, Heda Oya, Malwathu Oya, and Kala Oya, have prompted flood warnings, particularly for low-lying regions.

A total of 3,183 personnel from the tri-forces and police have been mobilized to respond to disaster situations across Sri Lanka. This includes 2,080 officers from the Sri Lanka Army, 520 from the Navy, 540 from the Air Force, and 43 from the Police.
