The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has announced that a discussion will take place next week to determine the next steps regarding the nominations for the Provincial Council elections.

Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne confirmed that the meeting, which will be chaired by the Leader of the House, will involve leaders of political parties represented in Parliament.

The outcomes of this meeting will guide the final decisions on the nominations for the upcoming Provincial Council elections.

Nominations for these elections were initially accepted in March 2023. However, despite preparations by the National Election Commission, the elections were postponed due to a lack of financial allocations from the Treasury.

Recently, there have been calls from various political factions to annul the nominations that were submitted earlier.
