In response to the ongoing heavy rainfall, all the automatic gates of the Victoria Reservoir were emptied this evening. The reservoir, which has a maximum capacity of 721 million cubic meters, is currently releasing water at a rate of 500 cubic meters per second into the Lower Randenigala Reservoir.

Chief Engineer of the Victoria Dam, Mr. Wasantha Ehelapitiya, confirmed the release, explaining that the sluice gates were opened as a precautionary measure due to the intense rainfall and rising water levels.

Mr. DM Dharmadasa, the Chief Engineer responsible for Mahaweli Dams, also mentioned that the opening of eight floodgates at the Polgolla Reservoir, combined with continuous rainfall in the Victoria catchment area, is expected to cause the spillover into the Lower Randenigala Reservoir in the coming hours.

Authorities have issued a public warning, urging people to avoid the Lower Mahaweli River's reserved zone, especially for fishing, due to the dangerous conditions that arise after the spilling of water from these reservoirs. The public is advised to stay alert for any further updates regarding the situation.

Stay Safe and Follow Official Warnings

As the situation develops, residents in the affected areas are urged to keep informed through official channels and adhere to safety guidelines.
