The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for heavy rains in several areas, effective until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow (November 26), due to a low-pressure area over the South-East Bay of Bengal that has intensified into a depression.
As of this morning, the depression was located approximately 530 km southeast of Trincomalee and is expected to move closer to Sri Lanka’s east coast, intensifying into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.
The advisory forecasts very heavy rains exceeding 150 mm in the Northern Province and Trincomalee District. Showers above 100 mm are expected in parts of the Northern, North-Central, Central, and Uva Provinces, as well as the Batticaloa, and Ampara Districts.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant about potential extreme weather conditions from today until Wednesday (November 27).
Meanwhile, naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to avoid sea areas around the island until further notice.
