Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala has emphasized that events commemorating Maaveerar Naal on November 27 cannot include LTTE symbols, such as logos, uniforms, or images of LTTE cadres.

Speaking at a Public event in Galgamuwa yesterday (November 24), the minister stated that while the government respects the public’s right to remember relatives who died in Sri Lanka’s civil war, these memorials must adhere to the nation’s laws.

He clarified that the LTTE remains a banned terrorist organization under Sri Lankan law, and any attempt to use its symbols or materials during commemorations will not be permitted.

The government has not prevented the people in the North from remembering their relatives who died in the war. However, they must do so within the legal framework, Minister Wijepala said.

The minister further explained that there have been instances in the past where Maaveerar Naal commemorations were misinterpreted or politicized by certain groups. He urged the public to conduct such events in a manner that does not glorify the LTTE or disrupt national harmony.

Minister Wijepala also highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and unity, stating that while the government supports lawful personal memorials, it will strictly act against any activities associated with the banned organization.

Maaveerar Naal, or "Great Heroes’ Day," is observed annually by some Tamil communities to honor those who died during the civil war, including LTTE members.

The commemoration has often been a sensitive issue in Sri Lanka, with concerns about potential glorification of the LTTE and its impact on national security.

The minister concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring peace while respecting the rights of individuals to remember their loved ones. He urged all citizens to act responsibly and in accordance with the law during this period.
