President Stresses Practical Solutions for Disaster Management
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Deputy Defence Minister Aruna Jayasekara today (November 25), the President highlighted the need to empower local government institutions to prevent disasters and develop innovative solutions, especially in vulnerable areas.
President Dissanayake also pointed out that Sri Lanka’s disaster management laws were carefully studied and formulated. He urged officials to implement these laws effectively and expressed his support for any official who performs their duties with integrity. He also encouraged government officials to suggest improvements to the legal framework if necessary.
The President noted that disaster management imposes a significant financial burden on the government but stressed that enforcing laws effectively could reduce these costs.
The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retired), Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Ravi Seneviratne, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, and Air Force Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa.
