Excavation for the Treasure in Veyangoda Ends Without Findings
Despite high hopes and the involvement of multiple government agencies, no treasure or archaeological items were found.
The operation, which began on November 21, was supervised by the Department of Archaeology, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Veyangoda Police, Road Development Authority, and Mirigama Divisional Secretariat. The search was initiated following evidence reportedly uncovered by the Police Special Task Force (STF) suggesting buried items at the site, a known target for treasure hunters in the past.
During the excavation, workers encountered a massive rock that required drilling after failed attempts to lift it with a crane. This extended the search and fueled speculation about potential findings. However, officials confirmed that exhaustive efforts yielded no significant results.
The site, located near the Central Expressway construction project, has been associated with treasure hunting for years. Previous inspections by the Department of Archaeology also concluded that no treasure was present.
The site has now been closed, and any future excavation will require fresh evidence and official approval.
