Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has called on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to fully implement the "vision document" signed with India in 2023. Speaking in India yesterday (November 22), Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of continuing the bilateral cooperation outlined in the agreement, which he signed with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his presidency.

President Dissanayake, who assumed office in September, is set to visit India in mid-December. Wickremesinghe stated that the vision document identifies key areas for strengthening ties between the two nations, including maritime, air, and energy collaboration and people-to-people connectivity between India and Sri Lanka. As well as trade, power, higher education and skill development, and tourism. He urged Dissanayake to advance these efforts, aligning with the aspirations of both countries.

The former president was attending an event at the Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar school, where he inaugurated a sports complex and delivered a speech on the shared heritage of India and Sri Lanka. He acknowledged India’s critical financial assistance during Sri Lanka’s severe economic crisis in 2022, highlighting the $4 billion aid package provided by New Delhi.

Wickremesinghe also reflected on the historic and cultural bonds between the two nations, emphasizing their longstanding religious, trade, and linguistic connections. As Dissanayake prepares for his India visit, expectations are high for further strengthening the partnership between the two neighbors.
