The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for a fundamental rights petition filed by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and others, alleging police misconduct during a peaceful protest at Polduwa by women of the National People's Power (NPP) in 2023.

The case, taken up yesterday (November 22) before Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Achala Wengappuli, and Priyantha Fernando, names former Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, OICs from Welikada, Thalangama, and Mirihana, as well as the Nugegoda Senior Superintendent of Police.

The petition claims that police unlawfully disrupted a peaceful protest at Polduwa on December 4, 2023, during the budget debate on the Ministry of Women’s Affairs was underway, violating the protesters' fundamental rights.

The petitioners seek a court declaration of their fundamental rights violations and request compensation for the affected individuals.
