President Anura Kumara Dissanayake urged all public officials to unite with a common purpose to transform Sri Lanka into a better nation. He made this call today (November 22) while officially assuming duties as the new Defence Minister at the Defence Headquarters in Akuregoda.

Upon his arrival, the President was warmly welcomed by the staff of the Ministry of Defence. He then held discussions with the commanders of the tri-forces and senior Defence Ministry officials to review ongoing and future initiatives.

During his address, President Dissanayake emphasized the importance of good governance and urged public officials to support the government’s development agenda. Highlighting the mandate received in the recent elections, where nearly 80% of the public backed the government, he said this reflected the people’s desire for change.

He assured that the government’s sole objective is to provide the political leadership needed to meet the people’s expectations. Strengthening public trust in the public service, he noted, is essential for the country’s progress, as a capable public service has been key to the growth of developed nations.

The event was attended by Deputy Defence Minister Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara, Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, and the commanders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, among other dignitaries.
