Jaffna District MP Dr. Archchuna Ramanathan stirred controversy on the opening day of the 10th Parliament by occupying the seat traditionally reserved for the Leader of the Opposition.
Dr. Ramanathan, who gained attention earlier this year for raising concerns at Chavakachcheri Hospital and later won a parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the 2024 General Election, refused to vacate the Opposition Leader's seat when asked by Parliament staff.
The first-time MP argued that no formal seating arrangements had been announced for the inaugural session and declared, "We have changed the tradition of the Parliament."
