Former Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe Announces Retirement from Politics
His announcement came after a visit to the revered Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, where he responded to media inquiries regarding his political future.
When questioned about the possibility of his return to Parliament, Dr. Rajapakshe firmly dismissed the idea, stating, “No, I don't have such ambitions. I have decided not to contest the parliamentary election.”
The veteran politician, who has served in various capacities over the years, cited the prevailing negative public perception of lawmakers as a key reason for his decision. "A public opinion, shaped largely by the media, has labeled all 225 MPs as thieves and corrupt. I have no desire to be part of that narrative," Dr. Rajapakshe explained.
The former minister also expressed his disinterest in continuing his political career, noting that he saw no personal or political benefit in remaining involved. “Given the current climate, I believe there is no reason for me to stay in politics,” he said.
Dr. Rajapakshe’s retirement marks the end of a prominent political chapter. His decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the integrity and future of Sri Lanka’s political landscape.
