Cabinet Approves Import of 70,000 Metric Tonnes of Rice

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the import of 70,000 Metric Tonnes of rice to address the current market shortage.

Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe, announced today (November 20) that the rice will be imported through Lanka Sathosa and the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Government Information Department, he confirmed that the imported stock will include ‘Swarna’ Nadu Rice. The decision aims to provide a short-term solution to the rice shortage in the country.
