The strike action by academic and non-academic trade unions, along with student unions at the University of Ruhuna, entered its second day today, November 20. The strike, which began yesterday (November 19), is demanding the immediate removal of the university's Vice Chancellor.
A discussion took place last evening (November 19) between trade union representatives and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
Dhammika S. Priyantha, Co-Chairman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC), stated that the Vice Chancellor has put significant pressure on the staff and students since taking office, accusing him of pursuing personal vendettas.
He also mentioned that several students had their studentships revoked, and many were barred from graduation ceremonies. Non-academic staff have faced penalties, and faculty promotions have allegedly been influenced by favoritism. Priyantha added that the Vice Chancellor's actions seem to be protected by political support.
Senior Prof. Charudaththa Ilangasinghe, Media Spokesman for the UTUJC, stated that while the government has responded quickly and discussions have begun, while remain hopeful for a positive outcome the strike will continue until the Vice Chancellor is removed from his position.
