The Sri Lanka Business Council of the Maldives (SLBCM) was officially launched in Male recently, marking an important step in strengthening economic ties between Sri Lanka and the Maldives. This initiative was conceptualized and driven by Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to the Maldives, Ranga Goonawardena, with the Council operating in affiliation with the Sri Lankan High Commission.
Speaking at the event, Maldivian Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed highlighted the significance of the Council. “This Council formalizes the strong economic ties between our countries, with annual bilateral trade already exceeding $160 million. It will help generate jobs, boost trade, and promote innovation,” he said.
High Commissioner Goonawardena expressed pride in launching the Council, calling it a bridge to new opportunities and a commitment to prosperity for both nations.
The Council, led by President Duminda Rathnadiwakara, aims to connect governments and business communities. Its mission is to create practical ways for collaboration, ensuring opportunities are accessible to enterprises of all sizes.
Comprising 14 Executive Committee members, the Council introduced a special membership category for Maldivian business leaders, with 25 honorary members inducted at the launch.
The event was attended by ministers, High Commissioners, Ambassadors, prominent business leaders from both countries, government officials, and other dignitaries.
The establishment of the SLBCM comes at a critical time as both countries seek to enhance trade, attract investments, and foster mutual growth. The Council is expected to facilitate partnerships, support entrepreneurs, and unlock new economic opportunities for both the Maldives and Sri Lanka with close economic partnerships.
