The Ministry of Agriculture has disclosed that a technical issue in its computer system is causing delays in crediting fertilizer subsidy funds to farmers' bank accounts. A team of officials was deployed on November 18 to investigate the issue, and a detailed report is expected to be submitted to the Secretary of the Ministry by yesterday (November 19).

The fertilizer subsidy, amounting to Rs. 25,000 per farmer, is intended to support the purchase of fertilizer for paddy cultivation during the ongoing Maha season. While the Ministry assures that corrective measures have been initiated, farmers in several regions, including Ampara in the Eastern Province, have expressed frustration as they have yet to receive the funds, despite over 20 days having passed since the start of cultivation.

According to the Ministry, the first phase of the subsidy program has successfully covered 23 districts. However, areas reliant on irrigation from the Polonnaruwa, Girithale, and Kaudulla reservoirs are experiencing additional delays due to delayed water releases.

Farmers from affected regions, particularly in the east, have raised concerns over the delay’s impact on their paddy cultivation, with many reporting difficulties in securing fertilizer during this crucial period.

In response, the Ministry of Agriculture has reiterated its commitment to resolving these challenges swiftly. Steps have already been taken to release the funds, and the Ministry has pledged to expedite the process to ensure farmers receive the subsidy in the coming days.

As the Maha season progresses, timely support is critical for farmers to meet their cultivation needs and maintain production levels. The Ministry has urged patience while efforts are underway to restore normalcy and ensure no further disruptions to the subsidy program.
