The government has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to advance Sri Lanka's economic recovery. Senior Mission Chief Peter Breuer and the IMF delegation met with President Dissanayake today (November18) at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss the next steps in the IMF program.

The IMF team congratulated the President on his electoral victory and expressed optimism about the partnership. President Dissanayake emphasized the importance of fulfilling the people’s mandate and highlighted that the success of the IMF program depends on restoring public trust in governance.

He assured the IMF that his administration prioritizes addressing the hardships of citizens and he urged the IMF to maintain a balanced approach that considers the hardships faced by Sri Lankans, with governments focus on combating child poverty, malnutrition, and providing better support for differently-abled individuals. The President also pledged to ensure that social spending allocations are fully utilized, addressing concerns raised by the IMF about underutilized funds in the past.

Governance and anti-corruption were key topics during the discussion. President Dissanayake reiterated his government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, pledging to introduce stricter laws to enhance anti-corruption measures and strengthen institutional frameworks.

The meeting, attended by Minister of Finance and Labour Prof. Anil Jayantha Fernando, MP Harshana Sooriyapperuma, and other Finance Ministry representatives, laid the groundwork for a collaborative effort toward economic recovery and long-term stability.
