Mahinda Rajapaksa says SLPP Received Expected Votes and Never Quit
Commenting on the NPP’s meteoric rise from securing just 3% of votes in the previous election to 61% this year, Rajapaksa remarked, “It is the people of this country who voted, not outsiders. I think we should respect the public mandate. Maybe they will succeed; maybe they will collapse.”
Rajapaksa reaffirmed the SLPP’s resilience, stating that the party would not abandon its political journey. When asked about his own political future, he quipped, “Which politician retires from politics?”
He also confirmed that no discussions are currently underway with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe regarding the SLPP’s future direction. Sharing his sentiments about Wickremesinghe’s political fate in the recent elections, Rajapaksa added, “I’m feeling so sorry for him, that’s all.”
Rajapaksa concluded by highlighting the SLPP’s determination to continue its political activities despite the changing landscape.
