Sri Lanka's health officials are warning of a possible dengue outbreak due to the rainy weather, which has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.

Consultant Community Physician Dr. Anoja Dheerasinghe from the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) reported 40,657 dengue cases in 2024, with 1,247 new cases in October and 20 confirmed deaths. Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara are the most affected districts, with other affected regions, including Kandy, Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, and Matale, at risk.

Authorities foresee a potential increase in dengue cases in the upcoming weeks due to the recent adverse weather. They stress the importance of taking preventive measures and urge the public to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds to prevent the disease from spreading further.
