Minister Vijitha Herath stated that vehicle imports will only resume under a regulated process to avoid depleting Sri Lanka's foreign reserves and sparking another dollar crisis. He confirmed that while the government agrees vehicle imports should be allowed, no imports have taken place since they assumed power, nor have any tariff concessions been granted.

"There is currently a growing demand to enable vehicle imports. A Cabinet decision on this matter was previously made. However, since we took office, we have not imported any vehicles nor permitted imports with tariff reductions," he stated.

Herath emphasized that the government will ensure imports are handled responsibly to protect the country's economic stability.

"As for vehicle imports, our position is that they should be allowed, but only through a proper and regulated process," the Minister added.
