Aththanagalu Oya, Sri Lanka Authorities are issuing a severe flood warning for the Aththanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys due to heavy rainfall reported across the region.
Hydrological assessments indicate a high likelihood of major flooding in low-lying areas, particularly affecting the Diwulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-ela, Katana, and Wattala divisions within the next 24 hours.
The Disaster Management Center has reported that over 22,000 individuals have been impacted by the ongoing weather conditions. Many regions, including Galle, Matara, Kalutara, and Gampaha districts, are experiencing significant flooding, with numerous roads submerged and traffic severely disrupted.
Irrigation Director SPC Sugishwara confirmed that rising water levels in multiple rivers are a direct consequence of the persistent heavy rains.
Duty meteorologist Mr. Sajith Wickramasuriya warned that localized areas in the western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, could see rainfall exceed 100 millimeters today. Other regions may experience scattered rain or thundershowers, with some areas receiving more than 75 mm.
Residents and drivers in affected areas are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant as floodwaters could inundate roads and properties. Disaster management authorities are on alert and are taking necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the flooding.
As the situation develops, updates will be provided to ensure public safety and awareness.
