Election observers report a notable exit of veteran politicians from the Election Race

Election observation organizations have reported that a significant number of experienced, veteran politicians will not contest the 2024 general election for the first time. This shift marks a major change in the political landscape.

Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of PAFFREL, highlighted the critical importance of this year’s election due to these unprecedented departures. Manjula Gajanayake, Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Reforms and Election Studies, added that over 50 active politicians have exited the race, raising questions about the future of political leadership in Sri Lanka.
