The Sri Lanka Army celebrated its 75th anniversary yesterday at the Panagoda Army Cantonment, marking a significant milestone in its history of maintaining national security and peace after decades of conflict.
The event featured a colorful display of flags and a formal parade, with Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu serving as the Chief Guest.
The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome from the Centre Commandant of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment, followed by a Guard Turnout. The Chief Guest, accompanied by Mrs. Janaki Liyanage, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit, was ushered to the parade ground to hoist the Army Flag.
A two-minute silence was observed in memory of fallen War Heroes, honoring their bravery and sacrifice. The anniversary parade, commanded by Major General A.H.L.G Amarapala, included 75 officers and 626 other ranks from all 25 regiments.
During the event, the Army Chief reviewed the parade and presented the newly introduced 75th Anniversary Commemoration Medal to 35 officers and 25 other ranks. He also awarded the Army Commander’s Commendation Badge to several distinguished personnel for their exceptional service over the past year.
In his address, Lieutenant General Liyanage paid tribute to former commanders and emphasized the Army's commitment to safeguarding national security, promoting citizen welfare, and upholding democratic values. The celebration was attended by past military leaders, current officers, and their families, highlighting the unity and dedication of the Sri Lanka Army.
