The Ministry of Power and Energy has announced plans to amend the Electricity Act, with a review already underway to determine the necessary changes. Secretary to the Ministry, Professor Udayanga Hemapala, confirmed that input from electricity sector trade unions will be sought to shape the proposed amendments.

The new revisions aim to maximize efficiency and ensure benefits for both the country and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) without causing harm. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who oversees the power sector, has instructed that the restructuring of the CEB be carried out in the nation’s best interest.

The amendments are expected to be approved by the new Parliament. The Electricity Act, passed on June 6, included provisions to divide the CEB into 12 entities and to streamline the workforce.  a move opposed by trade unions, who view it as an attempt to privatize the CEB.
