The Constitutional Council has approved the appointment of Senior DIG Priyantha Weerasooriya as the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP). The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena at the parliamentary complex today (8th October).

Weerasooriya, appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on September 27, has now received formal approval, a requirement for anyone serving as Acting IGP for more than 14 days. With 36 years of distinguished service, Weerasooriya is the first officer in the police department’s 158-year history to rise from Police Constable to IGP.

SDIG Weerasooriya previously held the role of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for overseeing crime and traffic operations. He also served as the Director of Police Logistics. Additionally, he took part in United Nations peacekeeping missions in East Timor and Haiti.

A Law graduate from the University of Colombo, he also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management. 10 IGP commendation letters have been issued in recognition of SDIG Weerasooriya’s thirty-six years of service in the Police Department.

Weerasooriya served as the Senior DIG in charge of the North Central Province at the point of appointment as the Acting IGP.
