Sri Lanka has formally requested India's support to join the BRICS economic bloc, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Vijitha Herath announced. The request was made during a recent meeting with India's Foreign Minister during his official visit to Sri Lanka.
Herath also confirmed that Sri Lanka has been invited to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit from October 22-24, 2024, following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia currently holds the BRICS chairmanship. However, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will not attend the summit due to the ongoing election period. Sri Lanka's involvement in the summit is important, but the specifics of the representation are yet to be finalized.
BRICS, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, recently expanded to include Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE. Sri Lanka's membership application remains pending, as it continues efforts to strengthen its global economic position.
