Delay in the launch of Mahawa-Anuradhapura Railway Line

The reopening of the renovated railway line from Mahawa to Anuradhapura has been further delayed due to the railway line's signaling system not being set up yet. The Department of Railways has informed locomotive drivers and regulators that trains cannot operate without the system in place.
The Ministry of Transport has been notified of the issue and has advised the Department of Railways to make a decision after consultations with relevant stakeholders. The railway line has remained closed since January 2024.
