In a significant development for national security, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dhammika Priyantha Kumara has been appointed as the new Director of the State Intelligence Service (SIS).
His appointment, announced yesterday, follows the retirement of Major General Suresh Sallay, who previously led the SIS amid controversy.
DIG Kumara, a seasoned law enforcement officer, brings extensive experience to his new role, having previously served as the Director of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) and as Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). His track record in tackling complex investigations is expected to bolster the SIS's operations.
Major General Sallay, who was appointed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, faced scrutiny during his tenure due to allegations linking him to the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks. Sallay has consistently denied these claims, but they have cast a shadow over his leadership.
DIG Kumara's appointment marks a new chapter for the SIS as it seeks to enhance its effectiveness in safeguarding national security in a rapidly changing environment.
