The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced that it will conduct the Local Government Elections following the conclusion of the upcoming General Election, in compliance with a Supreme Court order. The decision respects the court's ruling on 22nd August, 2024, regarding the Fundamental Rights Applications related to the 2023 Local Government Elections.

The Commission emphasized its commitment to upholding the democratic rights of the people and plans to announce a date for the local elections immediately after the parliamentary polls. Additionally, the election for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha is confirmed for 26th October as previously decided.
